You can even reserve the private room for an afternoon tea with a group of four to six people. Bookmark this midtown spot (right off 5th Avenue!) for the holiday season to enjoy their Festive Traditional Afternoon Tea, which includes gourmet sweet and savory bites and a glass of The Peninsula Cuvee Champagne. Reservations are available from 3pm to 5pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays—and at $185 per guest, each reservation includes a $10 donation to New York Children's Center. When you enter the lobby, you'll be greeted by the hotel's iconic Christmas decorations—an absolute must-see. But if you don't get a chance to visit around the holidays, afternoon tea is also offered in the spring. If you've ever been to the rooftop of The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, for a cocktail at sunset and beyond, now you have a reason to visit—and admire the stunning décor—in the daylight.

You have to climb a flight of stairs and peek behind a curtain to find this tranquil teahouse, which offers a succession of deftly crafted plates accompanied by a thoughtful list of teas and sake. Cha-An features not only matcha and senchas from Japan, but an extensive list of teas from all over the world as well. Cha-An also specializes in desserts – while some are traditionally Japanese, we also blend the tastes of Japan with sweets of the West. Not to be overlooked are our savory dishes, which include several types of toasts that are made with thick slices of fluffy, house-baked Japanese milk bread. For fine Japanese tea (matcha, green, white, caffeine-free, or iced) and bites (like fried tofu and mochi) served in a traditional Japanese lacquer box, take yourself to this moody teahouse in the East Village.

Put simply, the new high tea experience, offered every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 2pm, is special. When you step off of the elevator, expect a breathtaking glimpse of the Empire State Building—only to be matched by surreal 270-degree skyline views in the main dining area. The sweets make perfect final bites, but the truffle grilled cheese and smoked salmon roll are in a league of their own. At this hip hotel, high tea is served alongside jazz music over the weekend, with live bands rotating weekly. Pick your pot of tea to sip with finger sandwiches, cakes, scones, and more.

President Biden’s bold action will not only preserve the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument for generations to come, but also underscore our collective commitment to the protection of our public heritage and public lands,” said Rep. And the expansion of these monuments will provide increased access to green spaces for millions of Californians and boost local economies through sustainable tourism. The study sought to determine the suitability and feasibility of designating all or a portion of the Rim of the Valley Corridor as a unit of the existing area and how these areas could be better managed and preserved.

In Wrightwood — where residents saw historic snowfall but didn’t face as many issues as their eastern neighbors — Tamie Keen said she repeatedly tried to get updates and resources as manager of the Wrightwood Community Services District. On March 1, days after the storms began, Keen’s team wrote to county officials expressing worry that the town wasn’t even mentioned in the latest update. During the storms, it also took time for the county’s emergency operations to get running. It wasn’t until March 2 — six days after the National Weather Service issued its first-ever blizzard warning for the region — that the county’s OES began holding daily briefings to coordinate responses with different agencies, records show.

A Blanket of Snow for California

Springtime brings a kaleidoscopic display of butter-yellow golden fairy lantern, flame-like woolly Indian paintbrush, and brilliant orange starbursts of flame ragwort, all of which are native species that thrive in the area’s serpentine meadows. The delicate violet flowers of the Indian Valley brodiaea, a bulbiferous perennial herb that is listed as a State of California endangered species, can also be found tucked into serpentine seeps. Throughout the summer, the small white flowers of the drymary dwarf flax, a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sensitive species that is endemic to California, are widespread on Molok Luyuk’s higher elevation serpentine slopes. She most recently covered Orange County for The Times and has written extensively about criminal trials, housing, politics and government. In 2020, Fry was part of the team that was a Pulitzer finalist for its coverage of a boat fire that killed 34 people off the coast of Santa Barbara. Fry came to The Times from the Daily Pilot, where she covered coastal cities, education and crime.

Members of the oldest free-ranging tule elk herd in California also reside within the expansion area. Tule elk, which are endemic to California, had vanished from the wild until a formerly captive herd was released in 1922 in Colusa County. Other wildlife species that make their homes in Molok Luyuk include black-tail deer, black bear, coyote, bobcat, gopher snake, and western rattlesnake.

Under the weight of almost 10 feet of snow from back-to-back, unprecedented winter storms, her walls started buckling, pulling off beams and granite countertops. Nine back-to-back atmospheric river storms in January contributed to nearly two dozen deaths, including people killed by falling trees and surging stormwater. Heavy snowpack in recent weeks contributed to at least 13 deaths in the San Bernardino Mountains, where many residents were trapped for days behind walls of snow. A tumultuous geologic history underpins the expansion area’s diverse ecological communities. The backbone of Molok Luyuk is an ophiolite formed by unusual ultramafic rocks.

At the intersection of Carmelita Avenue and Walden Drive, in Beverly Hills, California, there stands a house which appears straight out of a fairytale. With its steeply pitched gable roof, wooden shingles, shutters that hang askew and small leaded-glass windows, the house appears jarringly out of place among its upscale neighbors. But the interior is quite charming and spacious with two master suites and a 3,500-square-foot floor plan. "Not only were you getting significant snowfall in areas that already see snow, you were also seeing snowfall on lower elevations in Southern California, which is super rare," said Bianca Feldkircher, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. Back in California, the Weather Prediction Center of the National Weather Service forecast heavy snow over the Cascade Mountains and the Sierra Nevada through the weekend. Meanwhile, people farther east were struggling to deal with the fallout from storms earlier this week.

An Orange County native, Fry started her career as an intern at the Orange County Register. A native of Guatemala, he got his start in journalism by writing for The Times’ Homicide Report in 2007. He helped uncover the financial corruption in the city of Bell that led to criminal charges against eight city officials. The 2010 investigative series won the Pulitzer Prize for public service and other prestigious awards.

Washington – Today, Reps. Mike Thompson (CA-04) and John Garamendi (CA-08) joined President Biden at the White House to announce the expansion of Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. The expansion includes approximately 13,696 additional acres of federally owned public land in Lake and Colusa Counties in California, encompassing the entirety of the Molok Luyuk region within the monument. "The expansion will add 13,696 acres of public lands, managed by the Department of the Interior, to the monument's original 330,000 acres, which are jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S Forest Service," the statement read. A rare weather phenomenon swept through California this past week, bringing snowcapped mountains behind the iconic Hollywood sign and more than 12 feet of snow to California's Sierra Nevada.

But Sunday morning, dozens of photographers packed into Kenneth Hahn State Recreational Park to snap shots of the glistening mountains. This expansion follows yearslong advocacy from Reps. Thompson and Garamendi; U.S. Senator Alex Padilla; federal, tribal, and local officials representing Northern California; and nongovernmental organizations, including environmental conservation, public access, outdoor recreation, and off-highway vehicle groups. In 2022, Reps. Garamendi and Thompson first introduced legislation to expand the National Monument and reintroduced the legislation this March.

Molok Luyuk played an important role in providing for the sustenance of the Patwin communities that were once found in the area. Occupants of nearby villages made seasonal forays to the ridge and flanks of Molok Luyuk in search of manzanita berries, clover, gray pine nuts, acorns, bulbs, and tubers, as well as to hunt elk and deer. Evidence of this cultural story marks the landscape today through numerous lithic scatters — sites containing ancient tools, tool fragments, and lithic flakes from tool production and maintenance — found along Molok Luyuk and around the area’s cold springs.

At least 14 species of bats occur in the area, including the western red bat, pallid bat, and Townsend’s big-eared bat, each of which is a California Species of Special Concern. The night skies through which they fly are remarkably unmarred by light pollution, which can disturb many species of bats as well as other mammals and birds, and provide increasingly rare and extraordinary stargazing opportunities to those who venture out after sunset. A series of weaker storms is expected to drop about an inch of rain across the Los Angeles area through Wednesday. Snow will also be likely, just not at the same low elevations as the weekend system.

Quinzhees are not usually meant to be long-term shelters, while igloos can be used for seasonal habitation. Constructing quinzhees is much easier than igloos, although the overall result is somewhat less sturdy and more prone to collapsing in harsh weather conditions. Quinzhees are normally constructed in times of necessity for survival, so aesthetic and long-term dwelling considerations are normally exchanged for economy of time and materials. A quinzhee or quinzee /ˈkwɪnziː/ is a Canadian snow shelter made from a large pile of loose snow that is shaped, then hollowed.

Forecasters said there would be a one-day respite before the next storm arrives on Monday. They will prepare to have more fuel for snow removal equipment in the event of another emergency, add cots and pillows in case they need to stay overnight and have a better line of communication with county officials, Davis said. Vasquez, 58, whose home was also damaged in the storms, kept the food bank running until a few months ago, when the county stopped delivering supplies. She said 25 to 30 people showed up every day to the distribution center, which also stocked clothing, blankets and medical supplies.

Storm clouds cloak downtown high rises in Los Angeles, Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, as a major winter storm sweeps through California. The National Weather Service said it was "one of the strongest storms ever to hit southwest California." For weeks last winter, many San Bernardino Mountains residents remained trapped in their homes, buried under as much as 12 feet of snow, some without power for as long as six days. Almost 350 residences and businesses were damaged or destroyed — including one of the area’s largest grocery stores, whose roof collapsed, and several houses that exploded because of buried gas meters. Unusual serpentine wetlands occur along Molok Luyuk, as well as on downslope benches and along Highway 20 near the Colusa-Lake county line.

Magical-looking cottages that inspired one of the most famous animated films ever.

When the studio shut down, producer Ward Lascelle, spared it from demolition and moved it to Walden Drive in Beverly Hills in 1926, where it now serves as a personal residence. The house was given an intentionally dilapidated look with a distressed paint job and overgrown English-style garden and a moat-like pond. The house’s wacky architecture made it a popular landmark in Beverly Hills, and inspired others to create more such storybook houses. The Witch’s House even appeared in a fair number of movies, starting from the silent era Hansel and Gretel (1923) to Clueless (1995).

This soil chemistry imposed evolutionary pressure resulting in a profusion of unique species and habitats that are inhospitable to non-native species that may dominate elsewhere. Vandi Mahoney watched television images of snow falling across parts of Southern California the last few days as a massive winter storm moved through the region, but on Sunday she just had to see it for herself. Rep. Thompson sponsored the legislation, cosponsored by Reps. Garamendi, Huffman and Matsui, that called for the initial designation of the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument in 2013. In July 2015, President Obama issued a presidential proclamation designating federal land surrounding the Lake Berryessa reservoir as a new national monument. The Monument's designation has since played a crucial role in protecting the biodiversity of Northern California. The National Weather Service said it was one of the strongest storms to ever hit southwest California and even as the volume of wind and rain dropped, it continued to have significant impact including snowfall down to elevations as low as 1,000 feet (305 meters).

Column: Why storms like this one will make solving homelessness even harder for L.A.

The Los Angeles Fire Department used a helicopter to rescue four homeless people who were stranded in the river's major flood control basin. Two were taken to a hospital with hypothermia, said spokesperson Brian Humphrey. Hospital staff slept on cots in offices, with 10 nurses rotating through shifts, while other staff maintained cleaning and food services, said Davis, who couldn’t get home to her 5-year-old son and husband for six days. Her insurer declined her claim, and a Small Business Administration loan covered only about half the necessary repairs.

Though winter isn’t over, and a renewed dry spell could still materialize in March, the significant storm and the systems that drenched the Golden State in January have defied expectations of a dry winter. Climatologists say the storms will probably be beneficial for drought recovery after years of prolonged dryness. On Sunday morning, Los Angeles Fire Department crews took two adults who were experiencing signs of hypothermia and their pet cat to the hospital.

At least two homes in the 400 block of Paulette Place in La Cañada Flintridge were damaged by debris flow and evacuated, according to CBS Los Angeles. Big Bear spokesperson Justin Kanton said the resort hasn’t made a determination yet on whether the snow brought by this week’s storm will lead to an extended season. A pioneer of this peculiar architectural style was Hollywood art director Harry Oliver.

Through Proclamation 9298 of July 10, 2015, President Obama established the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument (monument) to protect an array of spectacular historic, cultural, geologic, and ecological resources in the heart of northern California’s Inner Coast Range. The ridgeline, also known as Walker Ridge, is flanked by chaparral-covered canyons, serpentinite outcroppings, oak and cypress woodlands, and spring-fed meadows. Lands within the Molok Luyuk area show evidence of occupation by Indigenous peoples for more than 10,000 years. The historical significance of Molok Luyuk contributes to its cultural and spiritual significance to the Patwin people, and many other Indigenous peoples from northern California also have ties to the area, including the Pomo, Lake Miwok, Yuki, and Nomlaki. The area around Molok Luyuk has long contained numerous objects of scientific and historic interest.

Before coming to The Times, she covered breaking news for the Mercury News and national politics and California courts for McClatchy’s publications, including the Sacramento Bee. An East Coast native, Lin moved to California after graduating from Boston College and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. California’s deadly storm season turned even deadlier Friday as the first of two atmospheric river storms descended on the state, prompting widespread evacuation orders as it flooded creeks and rivers and dropped warm, heavy rain atop the state’s near-record snowpack.

But repairs, lost wages and insufficient short-term housing options are keeping some people in the red, said Rhea-Frances Tetley, 72, a longtime Crestline resident. He’s worried the cracked and now-leaning deck, which sits up the hill from his street and other homes, could give way at any moment — especially under the weight of more snow. Rowe said she would like the county to have one website for all emergency updates, and have the Office of Emergency Services return to the purview of first responders — the latter also a recommendation from the Sheriff’s Department. When the roads finally cleared, more than a dozen people had died, many found in their homes.

Here are some of the remarkable images captured of the snowstorm that shocked residents across Southern California. Members of the board are elected directly by voters from separate districts that encompass communities that the LAUSD serves, as indicated in the map below. It includes member of the Los Angeles City Council, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, California State Assembly, California State Senate, United States House of Representatives, and Los Angeles citywide officials.

LA County Board of Supervisors

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the 2nd largest public school district in the United States. During the 2016–2017 school year, LAUSD served around 734,641 students, including 107,142 students at independent charter schools and 69,867 adult students.During the same school year, it had 26,556 teachers and 33,635 other employees. It is the second largest employer in Los Angeles County, after the County Government. Every LAUSD household or residential area is zoned to an elementary school, a middle school and a high school, in one of the eight local school districts.

Netflix's 'Fall of the House of Usher' is an emotional letdown Los Angeles Times

house of ushers

All eight episodes were released on Netflix on October 12, 2023, each directed by either Flanagan or Michael Fimognari, with the latter also acting as cinematographer for the entire series. “Stephan is a very talented interior designer with exquisite taste who just opened his eponymous showroom on Santa Monica Boulevard, where he also has his design office. I’ve known Stephan personally for years and always want everything in his home.” —Wendy Haworth.

What deal did the Ushers make with Verna?

Poe conceived of his writing as a response to the literary conventions of this period. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” he deliberately subverts convention by rejecting the typical practices of preaching or moralizing and instead focusing on affect and unity of atmosphere. At Roderick’s words, the door bursts open, revealing Madeline all in white with blood on her robes. With a moan, she falls on her brother, and, by the time they hit the floor, both Roderick and Madeline are dead. Outside, he looks back just in time to see the house split in two and collapse. If it were to work, and Roderick were able to stay alive for longer, then the same would go for his family. The eight-episode series is now available to stream on Netflix. As the series draws to a close, Verna—whose name is an anagram of the titular bird in Poe's classic 1845 poem "The Raven"—is shown placing an item on each of the Usher's graves that represents their respective downfalls, closing the loop of her karmic retribution. Roderick then invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where he poisoned her drink and set to work mummifying her. It was shortly after this that Auggie arrived at the house to hear Roderick's confession.

It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. Roderick and Madeline are the only remaining members of the Usher family. “Lawson-Fenning is tempting to use as a one-stop-shop for a luxe layered home and call it a day. As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed. The Fall of the House of Usher is an American gothic horror drama television miniseries created by Mike Flanagan.

‘The Simpsons’ Producer Apologizes for Surprise Death: ‘We Certainly Didn't Kill the Character Off Lightly’

This bloody burial rite is the culmination of several telling moments throughout the season, including Madeline discussing mummification with Lenore in episode 2, and Verna nicknaming Madeline Cleopatra when they first meet in 1979. Roderick also famously opens his arms to any child of his, a gesture that seems uncharacteristically kind when compared to his crimes. But when you know the terms of Verna's deal, it reads less as a kindness than as a gesture of repentance. Roderick knows he's signed away the lives of any of his children, so this is his attempt to make their prematurely shortened lives as luxurious as possible. None of that luxury seems to translate to real love, though, leading to the deeply contentious, cold Usher family dynamic. English majors will likely know where some of the stories are going just by seeing the episode names.

The Masque of the Red Death

Annabel Lee reveals that she’d tell people “he’s rich” when they’d ask how he stole her kids away. But now she only sees poverty in Roderick, as he starved their children of love. After she turns her back on him, we learn that she died by suicide. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies.

And if you’re a fan of Flanagan’s spookier offerings, such as his chilling ghost stories, this might not exactly be what you’re hoping for from him. But give it time; it’ll start to win your over with its audacious mix of classic horror and modern sensibilities. Madeline actually attempts to find a loophole in this part of the deal by encouraging Roderick to overdose in episode 7, thinking that the Ushers' reckoning would end with his death. At the start of "The Raven," she brings Roderick back to life and continues her work.

The writers and critics of Poe’s day rejected many of that movement’s core tenets, including its emphasis on the emotions and the experience of the sublime. Poe’s contemporaries favoured a more realistic approach to writing. Accordingly, commentaries on social injustice, morality, and utilitarianism proliferated in the mid-19th century.

Camille (Kate Siegel) couldn’t let her animosity toward her half-sister, Victorine LaFourcade (T’Nia Miller), rest, so she goes to Vic’s research facility to dig up more dirt on her unethical experiments. Poe was often dismissed by contemporary literary critics because of the unusual content and brevity of his stories. When his work was critically evaluated, it was condemned for its tendencies toward Romanticism.

A-list musicians can easily sell millions of concert tickets for over $100 each. But it stands as one of the best shows (especially in the wake of the slightly less-than-thrilling ‘The Midnight Club’) that Mike Flanagan and his repertory company have produced. Smartly, Flanagan never pushes the weird style to excess except in certain moments where it actually serves the story; he’s careful to keep the characters largely believable. Anchored by Greenwood, McDonnell and Lumbly, there are few weak links in the ensemble, who bring the various Usher children (plus spouses, offspring, victims and more) to life. Carla Gugino, meanwhile, is pure smoldering brilliance as Verna, the architect of all their pain. Flanagan directed half of the series’ eight episodes, while Michael Fimognari handled the others.

Fearing that her body will be exhumed for medical study, Roderick insists that she be entombed for two weeks in the family tomb located in the house before being permanently buried. The narrator helps Roderick put Madeline's body in the tomb, whereupon the narrator realizes that Madeline and Roderick are twins. The narrator also notes that Madeline's body has rosy cheeks, which sometimes happens after death. Over the next week, both Roderick and the narrator find themselves increasingly agitated.

Poe implies incestuous relations sustained the genetic line and that Roderick and Madeline are the products of extensive intermarriage within the Usher family. Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family. Much to the narrator’s surprise, Roderick claims that the Usher mansion is sentient and that it exercises some degree of control over its inhabitants. According to Roderick, Madeline suffers from a cataleptic disease that has gradually limited her mobility.

It feels like padding to get episodes to a full hour when Flanagan and company could have leaned even more into the episodic structure that highlights a single Poe per chapter. As Roderick finishes his story, an eyeless and bloodied Madeline suddenly bursts out of the basement and attacks Roderick as the house begins to crumble around them. In a final burst of strength, Madeline strangles Roderick to death as Auggie flees collapsing home—a sequence that mirrors the ending of Poe's "House of Usher." Decades later, once it became clear that Verna was the one killing off the Usher children, Madeline tried to sidestep the deal by convincing Roderick to kill himself.

Park ONLY in the designated spaces and DO NOT double park. The Charlotte Table Tennis Club meets at First United Methodist Church in uptown Charlotte. We use the door on the north side of the church toward the back, between the small surface parking lot and the playground. We have partnered with the Charlotte Table Tennis Club and their 30 year presence in the community. When we met they were lacking a strong development program for their club members. Together we were able to succeed in meeting both our missions.

The Program

There is no reason to quit coming to our club after just few days or weeks or even few months. Most serious club table tennis players understand how complex table tennis is and don’t think of you as any less of an athlete or a person even if you keep losing to most other club players for years to come. Most are more than willing to help you nonetheless, in every way possible to improve your skill level, regardless of whether you are an absolute beginner or even an advanced player. Even if you are not interested in spending lots of money on equipment, you can get a good “basic” setup for less than $100 that can last for years.

However, it’s important to keep certain simple facts in mind before choosing to move up to the sport of table tennis as a serious club player. Table tennis is an extremely racket-sensitive sport and dependent not only on your own playing style but your opponent’s as well. Even many advanced players, let alone newcomers, have absolutely no clue whatsoever about the complexity of modern rackets. Our program for developing a player’s table tennis skill has three levels. Each level consists of four one-hour education sessions, and player progress is evaluated through four multiple choice quizzes, a skills test, and a cumulative multiple choice exam.

The skills test and cumulative exam will require a passing score to unlock the next educational level. Each education level has a corresponding training package. Players use the training service to help get a passing grade on the final examinations. A recreational ping-pong player's first visit to a competitive table tennis club can be daunting. There are youngsters whose shoulders barely clear the tabletop hitting forehand topspin balls at astonishing velocity and octogenarians whose skill with long pips rubber makes the ball seem to defy the laws of physics. Many of us grew up playing ping-pong in a basement or garage, with a recreational or even homemade table and hard rubber pips out paddles from Sears.

Though it is often incorrectly oversimplified down to a few basic styles, grips and rackets, every player needs to find a racket that exactly matches his/her playing style. As you lose over and over to every conceivable style of play you are learning from your beatings. Keep in mind that even a low level club player has more consistency, more touch and better rackets compared to most newcomers. This is no different than the difference between professional players and amateurs in any sport. If you are willing to work on improving your skills you can become a true table tennis competitor. Understand that you will likely lose A LOT of matches at the start.

We have long retired members, 6 year old prodigies and all between. We have long retired members, 6 year old prodigies, and all between. We are striving to make this as affordable as possible and are one of the least expensive table tennis clubs in the country. This also means that if you do not pay you will not be able to play. After a brief warmup (generally 2-5 minutes maximum), the players “choose” the server.

Advances in technique and the technology of sponge rubber and paddle construction elevate the recreational game of ping-pong to the (at the highest levels) the Olympic sport of table tennis. Charlotte Table Tennis Academy's mission is to provide quality table tennis education and training. We strive to educate as quickly as possible and maintain consistent training schedules.

Each player serves two points in a row and then the service switches to the other player. However, if a score of is reached in any game (deuce), then each server serves only one point at a time until one player wins two points in a row. In the final game (i.e., 5th game of a 3/5 match), the players switch sides again after EITHER player reaches 5 points and then play resumes as normal. Now the club and academy are working to provide an educational environment for everyone.

When we help you improve your game, it makes us have to improve our game, too. We offer table tennis education and training services through a three level system that is transparent, scalable, motivational, and efficient. Players can see the entire system and monitor their progress.

Educating the existing athletic educators to help more people understand the sports potential and benefits. Then it must be tossed up at least 6 inches and struck so the ball first bounces on the server’s side and then the opponent’s side. If the serve touches the net but would have otherwise been good, it is called a “let” serve. Sometimes all you want to know are the basic rules to play a friendly match of table tennis.

However, a game must be won by at least a two point margin (11-9 for example). A table will be made available in the open area for multiple youth to play while waiting for a session, after, or in between sessions. There is a small surface lot with a very limited number (10) spaces. This lot is NOT available before 6 PM on weekdays or before 1 PM on Sundays.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary, Characters, Themes, & Facts

house of ushers

When the young and trendy Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) decides to host an exclusive sex-and-drugs party at one of dad’s old factories in an abbey, readers of The Masque of the Red Death will know it’s going to be a gruesome scene. However, Flanagan is smart enough to shift the Poe narratives ever so slightly for a modern audience. His version of The Tell-Tale Heart is a modern gem, and “The Gold-Bug” is reimagined as a new brand for the Usher company. But the themes remain the same—guilt, obsession, vengeance, and a supernatural sense of justice.

Annabel Lee

Today Poe’s short stories are lauded as masterpieces of fiction. “The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories. The property also offers spectacular living space outside, added by the outdoor kitchen and dining. The heated swimming pool includes a spa perfect for relaxing while there’s a dance studio as well, perfect for the R&B artist like Usher. The story explicitly ties the physical House of Usher to the Usher lineage, stating that the peasants in that domain use the phrase “House of Usher” for both.

More From the Los Angeles Times

Between Juno and Morella — two outsiders who married into the Usher family — there's proof that some good can come of the corrupt Usher dynasty. Take Roderick's obsession with his daughter Victorine Lafourcade's (T'Nia Miller) experimental heart mesh, for example. Verna's terms very clearly state that Roderick's family dies with him. So when Roderick is diagnosed with CADASIL, he knows he and the rest of the Ushers don't have much time left.

Why Netflix’s buzzy ‘Fall of the House of Usher’ is an emotional letdown

Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline. “The Fall of the House of Usher” updates the work of Edgar Allan Poe for the era of Big Pharma, turning his most famous tales into a sprawling story of the decline of a wealthy American family.

“The Haunted Palace”

In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting, diction, and imagery combine to create an overall atmosphere of gloom. The story opens on a “dull, dark, and soundless day” in a “singularly dreary tract of country.” As the narrator notes, it is autumn, the time of year when life begins to give way to old age and death. A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies. Poe draws heavily on Gothic conventions, using omens and portents, heavy storms, hidden passageways, and shadows to set the reader on edge.

If that work were to succeed, she could live past her brother in a completely different way. The Fall of the House of Usher has been foreshadowing this pivotal Poe allusion throughout. Most obvious is the name of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, a direct nod to the long-dead victim of the story. Meanwhile, Roderick has been haunted not only by the ghosts of his dead children, but by the ghost of Rufus as well, still dressed in his jester costume.

In exchange for this protection, both Roderick and Madeline had to consent to the bargain that at the end of Roderick's life, just before he was fated to die anyway, his entire bloodline would die with him. Roderick and Madeline would also have to die at the same time, leaving this world the same way they came into it. The siblings agreed to the deal, left the bar, and soon after became convinced that the whole thing had been a shared delusion. As the doting mother of both Frederick and Tamerlane, Annabel Lee was devastated to lose custody of her children after Roderick gorged them with money they couldn’t refuse. We discover in the final episode, when she appears as a vision to Roderick, that she literally could not live without them.

Roderick and Madeline make a deal with a demon.

As if all that weren't enough, The Fall of the House of Usher hints at its "Cask of Amontillado" connection in its very first seconds, with an extra pertinent Pink Floyd needle drop. When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places. Most of the flashbacks to a young Usher and Dupin are thin, especially compared to the wicked fun on display in the fates of the Usher children.

Furthermore, the house, despite holding together as a totality, shows signs of physical decay, like crumbling stones, dead trees, and mushrooms growing from the masonry. Madeline herself is dying of a wasting disease, showing physical deterioration. Perhaps the most obvious parallel lies in the initially shallow crack in the manor, representing the impending destruction of the house.

house of ushers

Whether the reader is trapped by the house or by its inhabitants is unclear. Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family. On the one hand, the house itself appears to be actually sentient, just as Roderick claims. Its windows are described as “eye-like,” and its interior is compared to a living body. On the other hand, there are plenty of strange things about the Usher family. For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced.

She’s also a soul-music loving, coffee-obsessed member of both Team Cat and Team Dog. Ree lives in Tampa, Florida, and is a regular contributor to TODAY.com. Usher and Goicoechea held a small ceremony with their children after the game. He even posted photos of their special night after they exchanged vows.

house of ushers

(She reveals she got an IUD after the deal.) Instead, she's focused on herself. She's vowed never to let a man have any power over her, but in tying her life to Roderick's, that's exactly what she's done. To fix this, Madeline goes on the hunt for any way to break the deal's terms, leading to her research on algorithms and creating sentient AI versions of existing humans.

It's a death that brings Verna no joy, given that Lenore is the best of the Ushers. As Roderick puts it earlier in the episode, Lenore got all the wonderful qualities of his first wife Annabel Lee (Katie Siegel). We see this throughout the show, including when Lenore fights for her mother Morella's (Crystal Balint) life and refuses to bow down to Arthur Pym's (Mark Hamill) demands that she do what's best for Fortunato. Madeline approaches the potential consequences of the deal from a different angle, as she has no children who will die along with Roderick.

Late one stormy night, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) invites an investigator named C. He offers to lay out the truth about his family’s criminal, violent history. All of these nightmarish visions are attached to the family drama that Usher offers up for Dupin, giving the season a clever episodic structure in that each chapter intertwines a different Poe source into the overall saga of the Ushers.
